AI-Based Animation for the Museum of the Second World War
The project “Ordinary – Extraordinary” marks a breakthrough in storytelling. It’s an animation that brought to life the forgotten stories of World War II heroes — created almost entirely with the help of artificial intelligence.
In “Ordinary – Extraordinary”, a project realized in collaboration with the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk, we combined emotional storytelling with the power of modern technology. Thanks to the use of AI, we created an animation that not only tells but also shows the lives of those whose stories often faded in the shadow of grand historical narratives.
AI proved to be more than just a tool — it became a co-creator of this story. When historical footage and photographs were scarce or nonexistent, we turned to artificial intelligence. Based on descriptions, a handful of preserved objects, notes, and memories, AI generated scenes, visuals, and frames that — though digital — carry authentic emotion.
AI helped us overcome the limitations of historical documentation. It allowed us not only to reconstruct events but also to present them visually in a way that deeply engages the viewer. Thanks to this, we can now look into the eyes of Tanya Savicheva, peek into the diary of Janina Lewandowska, or witness the harrowing moment of repression against Bronia and Gerhard — moments that, until now, existed only in words.
Janina Lewandowska, Antoni Kasztelan, Edward Buczek, the Joniuk family… Each name represents a unique story, but together they paint a picture of war that is not just about dates and battles. It is a story about people — ordinary, yet extraordinary. Their stories could have been forgotten, but through technology, they have not only been preserved — they have regained their voice and face.
The “Ordinary – Extraordinary” animation is the first project of such scale at the Museum of the Second World War.
The foundation of the video production lies in the museum’s collection — memorabilia and archival photographs, which, thanks to AI, created a powerful visual narrative around the dramas of individuals caught in the wheels of history.
